147 2nd Cylinder Damage - Engine Control System Failure

I have a 2005 147 Lusso 3dr TS 2.0, that I have owned since February 2014. It has done about 108000 miles and had a new cam belt and water pump about 16000 miles ago when I bought it.

I was driving the car yesterday, on a dual carriageway, going about 60-70 mph when it started to judder and lose power. Similar feeling to running out of fuel. The Engine Control System Failure light came on and then I could smell oil burning and smoke was emitting from the exhaust.

I limped the car to a near lay by and called the RAC. When the RAC Mechanic looked at the engine and took off the Cylinder covers, the small spark plug in the second cylinder had been damaged and the bottom half was missing; and he could not extract the main spark plug from that cylinder. The remaining cylinders were ok.

The small broken spark plug he extracted was covered in oil and he said it had been smashed from underneath. He could not investigate it further as the head would need to be taken off at a garage to determine what had happened. My vehicle was then recovered.

Has anybody any idea what has happened and if it is a cost effective repair?

Many thanks

I could be v wrong, but that sounds like a new engine job to me.

I had similar symptoms quite a long time ago with Vauxhall Shove-it (don't laugh!); it had overheated, semi-seized, forcibly un-seized itself and punched a conrod through the piston crown.

It's dropped a valve most likely. It's not that uncommon.
Second hand engine time I'm afraid.
