You may be able to check the resisitance of its coils with a multi meter. When mine failed the resistance of the coils became very high. I think they should read under 1000 ohms.
The plug for it is on the back of the inlet manifold and is brown. Its quite easy to see on the 156 or other plastic topped TS engines.
Changing it is a challenge, but if you remove the throttle body and MAF etc it beomes a lot easier.
