Yes it can be.
You can modify things until the cow's come home. But the items that really made a noticeable were some of the slightly cheaper mod's.
Strut brace up front
. Cheap tighten's up chassis flex from cornering transitions. Down side you feel more bumps and issues in the road and they transfer from one wheel to the other. Less comfort.
Rear Strut Brace
- Again same as above but helps my four door. Probably less needed in a 3 door really.
You've already got 17 inch wheels. So you won't get any more handling grip by realisitically going any larger. Rather you'll just hinder more speed. That's the down side with 17inch wheels. Slower pick up in lower gears. Upside more cornering grip.
Want to make the 1.6 incredibly rev tastic... Get ones of these...

Forgot to mention it earlier.
Then really I'd just make sure it was all serviced and ticking over noticely.
The rest are all small modifications that you can do. Cat back exhaust and a good airbox. Usual things. But realistically its not gonig to make huge advancements.
Best bang for buck is always bigger engine or change car.
However whole heartily believe small cheaper mod's and keeping the car in tip top condition far outweigh any crazy fit some shiny bits to the car.
Really its up to you though and we could all give you lists to help improve your car no end. But those lists would need an extensive amount of money to back it.
Money best spent on keeping the car going.
