2004 147 Engine and gearbox issues
I'm new to the forum and Alfa ownership..... I've just recently bought a 2004 147 1.6ts Lusso thats done just over 63000 miles. The only reason I bought it was that the previous owner had the cambelt go at 47000 miles, so he has basically had the top of the engine rebuilt (new valves, cambelt, head gasket etc...) so I know the engine has a few miles in it before it needs anything major doing ... hopefully!!
Anyway down to the first of my issues, I'm getting what I can only describe as a 'whirring' noise when I first start the car in the morning, right after it fires up, or basically anytime the car has been sat for a few hours, it doesn't do it when its warm. Now having read a few threads on this forum I'm having a guess that this could the the camshaft variator that is making this noise.... Can anyone shed any light on this?
The other issue I have is with the gearstick.... for the want of a better word its very sloppy, I can find the gears just fine, there just seems to be a lot of play in it. In neutral it is centering (sort of!) and when it is in gear the is a lot of play too... Again I've been reading and I've read about the 'top hat' bushes on the top of the gearbox, would replacing these solve this issue or is it something else?
I'm wanting to keep on top of things as I really like this car and wouldn't mind keeping it for a while
Thanks in advance guys
