156 ECU failure

Having suffered complete engine failure while driving to work, my 156 was taken to my local garage to be repaired (our Alfa dealer has closed).

Apparently the ECU is dead and is going to cost me £250 plus vat plus fitting etc to replace BUT if it is attached to a Fossil body (sic) it is going to cost another £500 quid. Apparently they wont know if thats the case until they replace the ECU. Sounds odd to me ..

Has anyone ever come across a situation where the ECU may or may not be matched to another componant? If so can I check my card based on the engine serial?

Also can the ECU be changed by me or does it have to be 'matched' by the garage?

Any comments would be appreciated

Re: 156 ECU failure

hmm.. it sounds to me like the bill will be ever growing..

Take it to a reputed alfa specialist.. Things like ECU problems is probably not worth taking to a local garage. The ECU can drop dead from low voltage at start up, so check your battery or you risk losing another..
