Faulty ECU showing low voltage???
Hi, first time poster here. I spend most of my time on 80's Kawasaki forums so this is a whole new world for me.
My wife wanted a European hatchback so instead of a Golf I talked her into a 147. She bought a 2010 147 2.0 Selespeed, Blackline, it's so beautiful!
I took it for a drive last Friday to a town about 2 hours away. About half an hour into the return journey I got the 'Motor Control Unit Failure' message. The car was still running fine so I ignored it and carried on. About an hour after that I stopped thinking if I turned the car off then on again the error message would be gone. WRONG! When I started it again it all went pear shaped. It started rough wouldn't engage gears then I also got the VDC error (I think it was that it's all a bit hazey now). I rode home on the back of a tow truck.
As we've only had the car a few months, and I don't have any experience tinkering with it, so we towed it to our local Alfa dealer. After reading through these forums I thought it was most likely a crank shaft sensor fault or something like that. When the shop tested it the said there was a fault with the accelerator assembly, $470 (NZD) and takes 4 weeks to come from Italy!
Then the next day they said they had a second hand one, I also sent them a link to this forum where someone fixed their throttle problem by cleaning the wire connectors. They tried both of these things with no luck. Now they are telling me there appears to be a problem with the ECU. They said:
We have found the fault, the engine ECU that supplies the power to the both the throttle pedal and the air mass meter is only giving 1.7 volts instead of 5. We have traced all the wiring and cleaned the plug connecters, but have had no improvement.
We can send the control unit to try and repair it, we have about a 75% success rate.
I sent them a link to do an ECU reset too, he tried that with now luck too. And said this:
We have tried the reset, still no go,
We only have 1.7 volts on the power feed to one circuit of the throttle pedal.
A new ECU is $2264 + gst and it has to come from Italy.
So that's where we are at now.
Is a used ECU an option? There is something about Key codes that need to be reset. Ebay in the UK seems to have other parts but I could not find an ECU. Can someone give me a part number please?
P.S. Me and my wife are being very quiet about this to avoid the inevitable "told you so's" after people told us that Alfas are unreliable. My wife loves the Alfa - Toyota's can F#*k off!
