Got my 01 plate 156 selespeed at back end of 2006 with 19K miles on clock from a retiree. Silver with black leather although my ideal would have been red leather - never got around to update interior though.
Loved every single day of having it, looking at it, driving it and just sitting quietly in it. Love the cockpit shape, the curve of the dashboard, the armrest, the tight steering wheel, the v grill, left number plate, the smell of leather which still settles when i haven't sat in it for a few days when it is in an airport car park for frequent work travel. Been driven N,S,E,W, to Glasgow, to Brighton, wales to suffolk, enjoyed every mile. Now at 109K.
Every one i knew discouraged me from buying one back in the day but as a lurker here before I bought it, saw lots of potential issues in posts but something still said buy one then brace yourself for the bills. Had 2/3 gear type issues over the last 9 years for which paid around £60 - 200 a time to resolve, with initial checking advice from the gurus on here, hooked up with some great lads and got introduced to WAD who did the work. Luckily i never got the big bills that some others landed on here with. Plus getting a monthly car allowance from work and mileage paid, i've been driving the car for free for the last 5/6 years.
In the past I have kept cars for two year only then got something else, this was the longest, just couldn’t let it go! And moreso with this one and the one before it Peugeot 406 coupe, just to be different from the other cars in the area at the time.
The once smooth purr now sounds like an angry tractor on the 156 and I thought I would change by end of this year and probably go into a 3/4 year old Merc C class.
About 5 weeks ago had the red sele light on , too kit to very local alfa garage in bham (small heath /Sparkbrook), who cleared code and changed a relay switch, 50 quid total, but sele light on dash still showed. Was told can still drive it however could be something bigger which they did not really want to get their hands dirty with, talked big costs, mainly because I suspect because they wouldn’t have a clue. So drove around with an intermittent seles flash and sound – probably shouldn’t have !
However yesterday could start the car straight in a Neutral gear (Letter static not flashing) but cannot get into gear.
There is actually no pump sound when I open the door - loss of pressure, something bigger I don’t know and it doesn’t really bother me this time around – just need to speed up my new car search. I know any selespeed issue can be resolved and probably this can, may be 100 quid or a Thousand, I don’t know. My fear is if i get it fixed Imay keep it for another 5 years ! but Mrs wants to see it go
Parts (don’t know how to take them off) or just scrap it whole, will SORN this weekend and decide later when i have the time.
But just to say it’s been a great ride and thanks.
