Sounds to me like you have tried it on and got caught.
by your logic I can buy a car from a garage that performs MOTs, have it MOTd, if it passes or fails I can then go on a world cruise for 8 months and then turn up and drive the car from Edinburgh to London. It has only gone from the MOT station to my home and by the rules this would be acceptable.
(or if I had a friend that had an MOT station I could simply ask him to book my car in every day for the next 12 months and not have to pay road tax at all, "Yes officer, I'm on my way to the test centre now")
I think you would have much more of a chance of getting away with this if you had taxed it for the month of August in the first place rather than trying to save £14 (or less)
You can tax a car online (or if your name is on the logbook, over the phone) and it's valid immediately, as much as you might object to paying it there really is no excuse for trying to avoid it, there are so many ANPR cameras around these days its a fools errand to try and get away with it.
I think you have come on here for vindication and some support, but I also think that I pay my road tax (actually vehicle excise duty) so why should I support you or try to justify you not paying it?
