I think the 140bhp TDi engine does have a smidge more torque, but then it is a 2-litre. The 1.9 TDi with the 150bhp has more torque than the Alfa but I thought the lag was a bit much when I tried out a Leon Cupra TDi.
Reliability can be varied with any car you buy. If you get a dog of a Golf, it'll be just as much trouble as a dog of an Alfa, garage bills are about the same, insurance is about the same, servicing intervals are 2,000 miles longer on the Alfa JTDs and cost about the same. Not a lot to separate them in reliability and 2nd hand value of the diesels, the main differences are in the looks, the handling and the drive.
