156 2001 selespeed gearbox sounds (problem - anyone help?)
hi all - I've had 5000 or so of beautiful trouble free miles from my 156 - it now has about 63k on the clock.
I had the 72k service done on it when I brought it (at 58k) and the engine has been beautiful ever since.
in the last couple of days I have noticed odd sounds when engine breaking (i.e. I lift off the accelerator) - these sounds are something equivalent to dragging a object over a ridged surface - not particularly metalic.
the sound isn't too loud, but you can make it out over the engine from the cabin - it is much more pronounced in first and second gears but I guess that is because there is far less wind and road noise at lower speeds enabling me to hear it better.
the sound drops in frequency the slower the engine revs, very much as if the object over ridged surface is being dragged slower and slower.
The sound does not appear in neutral - either stationary or whilst rolling, so I took the car to palmer philips in oxford (who have looked after it since I got it). The guys there hadn't heard anything like it, and said that failure of a selespeed gearbox is rare and usually catastrophic. they also checked the oil level and found no metalic particles in the selespeed oil (this was a quick inspection, the car was not lifted.)
the gearbox still changes fine and there are no other issues other than a slight loss of power - but I think the loss of power may be in my mind as I am not going to accelerate as hard if I think she may be injured.
palmer philips suggested taking the gearbox out and re-building it - but this is an extremely time-consuming and thus expensive process, so I thought I'd post up here to see if anyone else has had similar issues and may be able to shed light on a cause.
would really appreciate any imput - I love this car!
