Alfa GT JTDM - Poor starting, white smoke and possibly running cool?
So my car's up for sale and I've lived with a minor problem, symptoms are:
- Poor starting (engine takes a few more turns than normal to start)
- Upon starting there's white smoke from the exhaust and rough idling
when the engine is warm or cooled down after a long (10mile+ drive) it starts fine, one turn, no smoke, normal idle.
After some forum trawling I've fond people complaining of thermostat issues where it runs cooler (Mine seems to sit between 80-90, but takes a while to get up to temp and while driving on a motorway say it's on 85*c). Apparently if the engine is running cool, the ECU compensates for this which can cause poor mpg and glowplugs burning out. I've noticed the fans never come on, even on a hot day when driving around or idling for a few minutes.
I've had my EGR partially blanked and I clean it out once a year, the glow worm relay and glow worms were replaced two years ago (Bosch plugs, Alfa relay). Also noticed recently that If I start up the car, and it struggles to start, a small amount of white/clear smoke comes from the back of the engine, sort-of where the EGR is. Is this normal?
Would it be advisable to replace the thermostat & glow plugs and see what happens? I'm selling my car so I want to get it sorted
