Knocking noise between 2-3000rpm

Hi, Can anyone help diagnose this problem?

I own a 2001 1.6 Alfa 156 Veloce and it has developed a mechanical knocking noise between 2-3000rpm from the engine. This noise can be heard both when accelerating and when lifting off but always between the same rev range. I took the car in to a local garage who could not work out what it was. Can you help?

Many thanks,

Big end bearings, maybe. Running low on oil at some stage. Also if you had bent valves at some stage it often damages the bearings as well and they fail at +/- 4 to 8000Km after valve replacement.
