pre-cats - what are they for

Hi guys

does anyone know what the pre-cats are for?? My 147 (1.6TS 88kw) has two pre-cats and one main cat behind them. I think the 77kw version only has one cat. Do the pre-cats improve performance or is this just an emission thing??

If i removed the pre-cats, and replaced the main cat with some universal one, would the car drive ok??

And by the way, anyone ever tried decatting the 88kw 147 completely, what was the performance gain like (if any)? Does the "check engine" light come on when there are no cats and emissions are high?
