I'm wondering if anyone can help me to figure out what's causing a disconcerting rattle in my 2.0TS 156 (definitely not that old favourite, the cam variator).
Basically it's a high-pitched, tinny metallic noise that doesn't vary with engine speed, that comes from somewhere under the bonnet, or maybe the wheels. It's a bit like little ball bearings rattling in a tin can (actually, the closest match I can think is the shelves in our fan-assisted oven vibrating, but that's probably not much help
It happens for a second or two when I start the engine, then basically comes back when I pull away from standstill through the 1500-2000rpm range. Doesn't happen if I rev the engine with the car stationary, or if I let the car roll with the clutch in. So it's just when driving slowly in first, usually hear it worst in multi-story car parks for instance.
I'm pretty sure it's just something loose that's resonating, but since it'll only do it with the car in motion I'm having a hard time figuring out what.
Has anybody had a similar noise, and if so what did it turn out to be? It's probably just the undertray or something, but I'm slightly worried it's a bolt working its way loose from something important.
I'll get it to the garage in a couple of weeks if I can't figure it out before that.
