Top hat collar on damper..is it needed?
Hi there, when I replaced my standard shocks with the B12 kit a few years ago I simply swapped all the ancillaries over.
When replacing the upper doughnut the other day I had a rethink on the little top had collar that's fitted over the damper. Is it needed, what does it do?
The doughnut is a snug fit on the threaded part of the damper so doesn't pass over the shoulder. The top hat is mounted right way up, meaning it passes through the hole in the mounting plate, the brim of the top hat then rests on the underside of the plate.
I can't quite see what it's doing, without it under compression the doughnut would bear down on the damper, as it is the mounting plate (and maybe still the doughnut to an extent) is pressing the damper down.
Is it a part I shouldn't have swapped over?
All the best
Loose - not close, compact, or tight in structure or arrangement
Lose - to part with or come to be without, as through theft, accident, negligence, etc.
