Black smoke in 3rd gear GT jtdm

Hi all.
I have noticed recently that under heavy acceleration in 3rd gear I get black smoke coming from the exhaust. I have no warning lights on the dash and there is no flat spots or lack of power. When I change to 4th, 5th and 6th there is no clouds of smoke.
Any help would be appreciated

lower or upper turbo hose leak perhaps - fairly common fix with silicon replacements if it is

Turbo hose and vacuum leaks give a very noticeable loss of power accompanied with alot of smoke so this is probably not the cause.
I like the maf idea from rc as a high reading here would over fuel. I'm not sure how effective cleaning is but check it is a bosch item as cheaper alternatives don't work. The map sensor could cause similar problems and is easy to clean as well. Check the air filter is not constricted or wet.
Generally if the car pulls well and is still giving good mpg then I would take the attitude of better out than in although I accept it's a little embarrassing driving a smoker.

Thanks for the replies. Mpg is good and the car pulls fine, it is a touch embarrassing when you put your foot down and disappear in a cloud of black smoke! I will check out the sensors.

A quick update, I took the car to Ferdis garage (local specialist) and it turns out the throttle body on the intake side was really clogged. After he cleaned this up all is well. The car no longer smokes and throttle response has improved as well.
