Phase Variator

Hi folks. How could I tell, if at all, if my problem is the variator itself or the sensor? Car is a 2004 156 1.6 tspark by the way.

Roughly - if it rattles from the top of the engine - particularly on start-up, then the variator is probably worn....

Not sure what sensor you would mean? The variator is activated at around 3000 revs by a signal from the ECU to operate the solenoid which allows oil to advance the variator.....
