Hi all, I hope someone can help me out here. I had to start a new thread as I couldn't find an answer on previous threads.
OK to start off, I've a 2001 147 TS 1.6 120bhp. Love the car but this problem just doesn't want to be resolved.
A few months back I had my my winter tyres swapped for summer tyres. Driving home that evening I noticed a grinding sound when braking. No warning messages or beeping, just the grinding noise. The grinding only appears at the final moments of braking when the car is just about to stop. I spoke with the guy who swapped out the tyres and he assured me he swapped the tyres one at a time so the rims have not changed position. Since then I've had four different mechanics look at it and no one can resolve the problem.
Mechanic 1: checked brake pads/hubs/fluids all good condition, took it for a test drive with laptop connected. No warnings, no uneven distributions in the power to the wheels. His opinion was that maybe ECU was bet and I could maybe source one from a scrapped car. (No charge, nice guy and apologetic that he couldn't help)
Mechanic 2: assured me it was a mechanical fault. Checked the pads/hubs/fluids. Even clamped up the different side of the brakes lines to see which side was misbehaving but couldn't figure it out at all. (No change, mechanic was a friend)
Mechanic 3: again assured me it was a mechanical fault. Disassembled and re-assembled the brakes. Confirmed that everything was in good mechanical order. Plugged in the diagnostics - no faults/errors. Grinding still there!
. The situation had improved slightly but it still wasn't gone. He actually changed his mind and said it must be a computer fault cause mechanically he said the brakes were all in great order.
Mechanic 4: Again couldn't find any faults on the computer system. He advised that the wheel bearings were badly worn and could possibly be the source of the problem but he couldn't guarantee it. I said 'sod it' and told him to change both bearings. GRINDING STILL THERE
I am completely lost now. The last job cost much more than I had expected. The problem is not resolved. There's no way the car will pass the NCT, which is now due. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated
Otherwise she's for the scrapheap
