156 2.4 JTD alternator replacement

Hello all. I'm new to Alfas (I'm a Vauxhall man) so forgive me if I'm a bit optimistic here........ Last night the alternator on my mother's 156 packed in spectacularly. I've had a look down the back of the engine and it's sitting at a very funny angle so I'm guessing either the mount has come loose/broken or the alternator itself has imploded.

Basically I need to know if it's possible to replace the alternator at home? If so, are there any special tricks I need to know? I can be handy with a spanner but after recent electrical nightmares with my Vauxhall Senator I don't want to touch a modern car any time soon

Getting the alternator off its mount ain't too bad but you need the rh and rear mountings off the engine to get the alternator out so not one to try at home I think. Also no special tools needed. Cheers kev

Apparently according to eper it's not that bad a job and you don't need any engine mounts off, you do need a special tool to tension/slacken the belt, but you can make this tool like i did.
