Uneven tyre wear

My new purchase, 156 SW JTD, is causing me a few grey hairs! Rear tyres both worn down on the inside edge right down to the cords yet the outside of the tread still has 3mm left. To stop policeman plod showing unwanted attention I replaced the tyres today but not sure whether previous owner just swapped them from front to rear. Tracking, bushes, susp. arms, expensive, easy to do? Help? Loving the Alfa but wallet not feeling like playing at the mo.

Re: Uneven tyre wear

It's very likely they were originally the front tyres as the 156 is notorious for wearing out the inner edges at the front first, especially on cars with lowered suspension or heavy engines.

Tracking needs to be checked on a 4-wheel system as both fronts and rears can be adjusted. And the front toe-in should be set to 0 degrees (sport setting).

Check for wear in the front balljoints and arms, rear hub bushes and transverse arms. The rear arms are also easy to bend as they are just pressed steel.

As for cost, depends if you do-it-yourself or have to pay someone ... and whether you use original Alfa parts (£££s) or OEM pattern replacements.

cheers, Gary
