If you have a big vice and are going to buy a new door check strap anyway, before you do, take the old one and put the end that bolts to the door frame into the vice and squeeze the pin until the movement just stiffens up a tiny bit. This shortens and fattens the pin taking up the play in the inside diameter of the strap and stops it making the cracking noise every time you use it. it lasts longer than the floss method as well. There is the slight risk you'll bugger it completely (which is why I say only try it if your prepared to change it anyway and therefore have nothing to lose) but as long as you do it a bit at a time and keep testing it you should be fine.
