Have you only got the 1 key?
I had a 2001 156 1.8TS, the receiver is under the rear parcel shelf, mine would go to sleep from time-to-time, however if I held the remote at the base of the rear window it would work, once awake again it would work at a distance as normal.
Having said that if you can open the boot OK it sounds like a fob problem, if the red light doesn't flash with the big button it possible you have the button rubber/microswitch/pcb problem.
You can get a repair kit for not a lot of money here on eBay
if you're handy at that sort of thing.
You'll need to swap your innards and blade over and solder on the new microswitch(es).
Loose - not close, compact, or tight in structure or arrangement
Lose - to part with or come to be without, as through theft, accident, negligence, etc.
