MS and possible ECU fault?

Two 156's of the same 98 model in the family (glutten for punishment). Multiecuscan works fine on one but I get the dreaded "Ecu no responce" on the other. I'm actually trying to troubleshoot a cooling fan problem so it would be great if I could get MS to work.

I'm wondering if the non responce of the ecu and the fault with the cooling fans (they wont start) might point to a damaged ECU. If this IS the case, does anyone know if it's possible to change the ECU and if it's a viable repair considering the value of the car?
