Re: Alfa 156 (04 model) 1.8 petrol
I think it depends on the car ... for three years mine needed lttle work and covered almost 60000 miles ... IIRC it had a new clutch, variator, rear transverse arms, MAF and lambda and all under warranty.
My dealer (SGT) was great, and knowing I had another Alfa (75) seemed to treat me better than the ex-beemer co car drivers who ragged their cars to the limit.
The next few years it was the second car .... covered about 30K and it wasn't until 2001 the real expense started. Lost a cambelt, then a big end, and various suspension work on the front. Just spent over £400 on parts to get it through the MOT and that included sorting a leaking master cylinder. Apart from major engine work, I do it myself, which saves a lot when you expect around £90 per hour in dealer labour costs.
Few sets of tyres ... finding the right compound/make can make the difference between 7000 or 20000 miles.
If you want an Alfa, my advise it to get one. But go in with your eyes open. Then cam make or break you ... when they are on-song, they are the love of your life. But like any wife/mistress, they can have their off days and have a tendency to be expensive when you don't need it.
Dave: Veloce's have been in the Alfa business for a long time so should know their stuff. If they were bad, Alfa would have pulled their franchise (they have chopped 60% of the UK dealers in the past year I've heard!) There is a years warranty (check the small print), so part with the hard-earned and enjoy!!
Just expect to need a new cambelt soon ie 9000miles (try AlfaWorkshop in Royston for a good price!)
