Don't waste your time trying to start it if the immobiliser symbol is on....it'll spin over til the end of time and not start.
The immobiliser is disabled by sensing a signal from the immobiliser chip in the key, which is picked up by an antenna round the ignition barrel then to the immobiliser ECU. The antenna cable can be damaged, particularly if the steering column is adjusted up or down. Worth checking this cable - and tracing it back to the ECU to check the connection there.....Of course if you have a spare key, its worth trying that just in case the oriiginal has gone faulty, although its unusual. (Don't get distracted with changing the battery in the key, that has nothing to do with the immobiliser.)
