156 Spong Removal

Hey guy's,

I have recently spoken to a so-called Alfa Romeo Specialist who informed me that it would be a good idea to remove the black sponge set's underneath each top corner of the bonnet as leaving these in apparently causes them to store water and rust the car from the inside out in that area.

If you lift up your bonnet these are located at the top left and right bonnet corners and there are 2 per corner and black in colour.

Now, me being me assumed that AR installed these for a reason, can you tell me if I am right or if he is?

My first guess would be to stop any leaks coming through the footwell's etc...

Any advice is appreciated as I am not sure if he is talking a load of old tosh, lol

Re: 156 Spong Removal

i believe they are used to stop vibrations from the bonnet.

Don't take them out completely. water can drain under them but they block up with leaves. take them out everytime you wash the car and clean out under them.

Can't say I've ever known them so store water (like a sponge), but they may stop it draining.

Can removing them cause any leaks then or not?

To be honest, I'm not going to remove them, just want to know what he was smoking at the time, lol

Re: 156 Spong Removal

leave them there.

as already suggested, it's worth removing them occasionally - say every 3~6 months - to clean away any accumulated debris (leaves, dirt, etc). this will minimise any possible corrosion, even though it shouldn't happen.

i believe they are primarily there to reduce air turbulance and wind noise, as well as minimising collection of debris (without them even more gunk will collect there).

Re: 156 Spong Removal

I took mine out a while ago because they were soaking up water.
I used to squeeze them out after washing the car, but there was no way to do it every time it rains!

I've noticed no adverse effects and the area under where the foam was is easier to keep clean no too. It used to fill with cr4p even when the foam was still fitted, now there is far less cr4p accumulating.
