Re: Braided hoses?! To change or not to change?
Pressure in liquid spreads equally in all directions and it depends on the surface of the pistons, in this case piston in brake master cylinder and pistons in brake calipers. If you apply certain pressure on master cylinder, the resulting pressure on the pistons in calipers (pressure on brake pad) will be the result of the ratio of pistons surfaces and doesn’t depend on the diameter of pipes connecting it.
I don’t know if I can explain physics well in English, so just one example. Imagine that the master cylinder piston has surface 25 square cm and piston in caliper has 5 square cm. If you apply certain pressure on master piston, the pressure on piston in caliper will be 5 times bigger (ratio of surfaces). It doesn’t depend on diameter of connecting pipe. The liquid doesn’t flow in the pipe (only marginally to fill piston in caliper), it is just a medium transporting pressure and diameter has no effect.
Braided hoses are used as they don’t expand under pressure as rubber ones. Rubber hoses expand under pressure, it means you have to pump slightly more liquid into the system what means your brake pedal travel is longer and it looses some feel because by pressing on pedal you don’t just adjust pressure on brakes but you force the rubber pipes to expand and contract as well. There you loose the feel in brakes. At the same time this helps to not-so-skilled drivers to control the brakes more smoothly, as rubber pipes "filter" slightly their changes of pressure on brake pedal.
