I tested mine last week vented through a small filter after we discussed this, the car didn't feel any different to drive, but it did put out a lot of smoke, which it doesn't usually do.
It could be down to either the filter (which was brand new) causing more of a restriction and so forcing the fumes back into the engine, or even though a diesel doesn't create a vacuum, you still have a negative pressure in the intake system which would help draw the vapour through.
I'm no expert on this so it's just what I found on my car, and I don't wont to run a pipe straight out with no filter as over time all of that gunk is going to end up in my nice clean engine bay.
The Puck you mentioned, assuming it the one at the rear right of the engine, is a pressure valve to stop oil feeding into the turbo through the pcv system and destroying the engine.
