When I went to look at my car the black leather looked so classy and as I spend the day in a steel fabrication factory, I felt it was a more sensible option than the red. The "black" paintwork I knew would be a bugger to keep clean but it did seem so restrained and upmarket, I was getting drawn in, The seller backed it of the drive and took me for a few miles up the road, He pulled over for me to drive and asked if I wanted to have a listen under the bonnet, on tickover it was nice no rattles or nasty noises, then he gave it a bit of a rev. - sold to the man with the hairs standing up on the back of his neck!!!!!
I jumped in for a test drive, expecting a typical wayward front wheel drive, but with more torque steer and horrible feel through the steering wheel - If your gonna be wrong you may as well be way wrong
As you all know the 156 drives like a dream, no torque steer, no body roll, very direct steering, very refined and quite dignified, 'till you plant the right foot (although I didn't know at the time the MAF was knackered) it picked up and went very nice, got back to the sellers place and tried to barter, but I had fallen for this car, and hard! Did get a bit off and wanted a full MOT on the car, Deal struck. Back to my folks for a quick cuppa and a calm down and then back to Wales in the Polo
It was a long 5 days 'till the 156 was ready to pick up, Thursday evening straight from work and into the Father in Laws Hilux, and no I wasn't at all excited
It didn't sink in fully on the way home, But as I drove slowly thru' a little village on the way to work nxt day I just had to chuckle to myself - and I'm still chuckleing every time I take it anywhere
In terms of running costs its not too bad for me (I keep telling myself)
Insurace is about £40 per year more than the Polo
Petrol is about £25 a week instead of £18 in the Polo
I have spent on parts etc, but she deserves it don't she?
I am also now buying polish and leather cleaner, 'cos this car deserves a pampered life, and I love cleaning cars with lines like these.
