Had a nice spin the other night, went down to Telford in the 156, for a wedding party. Parked next to my little Bro's Porsche 944. We took each others cars out for a quick spin, so 944 back to back with a 156...
Well likes for the porker, its a porker
its has nice 911 wheels, rear wheel drive, and nice predictable handling, even on soaking wet roads.
According to the book, the performance should be similar to the 156, but it delivers in a completly different way, more torque, less revs. and IMHO less go, it really felt 20mph slower for the same "effort" in my car, although you don't thrash your brothers pride and joy.
Steering was heavy and wooden feeling, the wheel trapping my thighs to the seat, which was uncomfortably narrow, and making a dignified entry or exit very tricky without practice
The dash layout was dated (it is a 1984/5 model) but in a very nice way, rear vision through the mirrors was at least as bad as the 156.
The gearbox was a joy to use, and I think a later 3.0 version would be a different car completley, but there is no way I'd exchange my 156 for a 2.5 944.
So here are the scores:
Italy, performance, style, comfort, ride,
Germany, Rear wheel drive, Gearbox, The Name, torque.
So it'd be a draw then tiebreaker on handling gives a draw, but on reflection the awesome way the 156 rips through the revs, gives it victory, and also the fact that on this site at least, I win the Name too.
