I liked my 156 so much I sold it and bought another one!
Here’s the story;
I got my first 156 in July 2003. I’d wanted one since I first saw it at the 1998 motor show and when I found my self in the position to buy one I knew I had to seize the opportunity.
I scanned Autotrader for ages and eventually found a suitable car at a small independent specialist dealer in Hexham. They had about a dozen 156s for sale at the time so while I was going to see a particular car I was also going with an open mind.
On the journey there I saw three red and three silver 156s so I decided that my 156 would neither be red or silver as they were ‘too common’.
The car I went to see was 1.8 Twinspark Sportpack 1 in Africa Grey and to be fair I’d bought it within ten seconds of seeing it. I had a good look round it, did all the necessary checks and agreed to pay the full screen price with petrol and tax thrown in.
I went to collect the car about a week later and the journey back down the A68 was an absolute hoot. I was addicted.
I owned the car for 3½ years and after discovering AO I added a few cosmetic and performance upgrades and took it all over the place including a few interesting meets and runs and on a track day at Croft circuit.
Earlier this year I decided it was time for a change. There was no doubt in my mind that I was going to stick with Alfa Romeo, although I briefly got my head turned by a Seat Leon and an MG TF. I tried my hardest to fall for the 147 but after travelling 280 miles to view a particularly nasty example I decided the 156 was twice the car the 147 could ever be.
So I was on the look out for another 156 but only if I could find a car with a completely different specification to the one I had i.e. new shape, JTS engine, leather and 17” wheels.
Within a few weeks of searching the whole country I noticed an advert on Autotrader for just the car I was looking for only there were no pictures and the price was well over my budget.
I contacted the dealership, the salesman emailed me some pictures and immediately I was smitten. I travelled down to Knaresborough to see the car, a new shape 156 2.0 JTS Ti in Lipari Grey, a couple of days later and as with the first car I knew almost immediately I would buy it.
So here I am, four months into ownership of my second 156 and after a couple of incidents with a deer and a neighbour’s Astra I’m really starting to enjoy it.
