Lack of power on Alfa GT 1.9 JTD
Hello. I've been looking for advice in this forum a couple of times as an anonymous viewer and have to say it is very helpful. However now I have a problem which requires more attention therefore I am posting this thread in the hope to get some information.
So, my beloved GT 1.9 completely lacks power, to the extent that it's nearly undriveable.
The story so far:
It's been parked in the driveway for about two 2 months as I was using a company car. When I started it a few days ago initially it was hesitant but everything seemed to be fine. Then the Motor Control System Failure light went off, the car started accelerating very slowly while on low revs and then as normal but creating huge clouds of black smoke.
I brought it to a mechanic, not a very reliable one to be honest. He told me that the fault was the some sort of mass sensor (I might be wrong on this one as I never got the receipt), that he'd changed it and that the error has disappeared and everything was fine. Well, it wasn't - the error didn't show, there was no black smoke, at least not as much but the car was even less driveable than before. It took me a lot of time and nerve to join the traffic from a side road so I can bring it back.
Now he doesn't seem to know what to do with it, neither do I.
After spending hours on this forum I thought I could be the bloody EGR valve and told him to disconnect it. Obviously he won't be able to remap it but would disconnecting i only enable me to at least bring it back home? Do these symptoms sound like the EGR could be at fault or I've got to be looking somewhere else?
Btw I have experienced these symptoms for some time, a bit of slow acceleration at low revs and a bit of excessive smoke but it was hardly if at all noticeable.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
