Can't get 4th gear!!!
Driving back from my daughter's yesterday I was suddenly unable to select 4th gear (all other gears working fine), it feels as if something fairly substantial is blocking the movement of the gearstick in that direction. However this cleared itself eventually and I was able to select 4th for the remainder of the journey (it's only fairly recently I was boasting how very reliable my car is - SORRY Alfa Gods).
The fault came back again today and this time it seems inclined to stay. Would I be right in thinking this is likely the "swarf in the gearbox issue" I've read of? The car is a 54 plate manual box JTS with just over 90k (miles) on the clock.
I've not had chance to look at it yet but tomorrow I'm going to check out the linkages, cables etc. to see if it's anything easy and external to clear. If that fails the plan is to take the end plate off the gear box and clear the swarf.
Has anyone else done this? What kind of and how much oil will I need to replace? do I need any gaskets or other consumables? (if so I want to pick them up before the car is immobilised).
Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any help offered.
