Its always going to be hard to get a decent noise from an inline 4 point blank.
They are just too well in symmetry. Like an inline 6. The firing order doesn't allow for burbles or cross firing. So the noise is well somewhat subdued.
I love inline 6 engines but they do sound like sowing machines. Still given that they are balanced will primary and secondary you can get them to rev like monsters though.
Still a new exhaust will help emphasis the sound regardless.
Before my time the Renault 5's really. But i do remember a phase where there were mostly 80's / 90's cars with moderately sized engines with mega turbo's with huge lag then enough power to chuck you in a ditch pretty quickly.
