I know how you feel...
I have tried to convince myself I have been unlucky but in 8 mths of alfa ownership across 2 cars (a jts and my current jtdm) I have experienced
1 exhaust flexi pipe
2 cracked alloy
3 banjaxed exhaust camshaft
The car was finally written off in a car park prang leading to the purchase of my current blackline jtdm Which has already had.
1) new clutch
And elective stuff
I have as stated before had a remap so take full responsibility for the clutch ..but the flywheel at 75k!
And I live in constant worry of swirl flap ingestion..
Also imo the arb's needed upgrading as the body roll is awful in stock form. in addition the egr needed mapping out to avoid all the related shenanigans.
In complete contrast my now 18 yr old BMW e36 did 30k in the first year of ownership without a hiccup And honestly if I was touring Europe It would be the BMW I would take ..being far simpler to work on in the unlikely event it did breakdown.
I do think a lot if the problems people are having are diesel related as they have a lot of additional things to go wrong, like egr and turbo related stuff , a very high pressure injector rail and the swirl flaps in the plastic inlet mani.
But if it makes anyone feel happier BMW also have the flap issue on the dervs..and many other marques have dpf issues as well as all the other stuff..audi,volks and mercedes are not without problems..mate at work is having awful trouble with civic derv.
After some initial work though...
I now have an alfa that runs beautifully and returns 40-55 mpg with an average of 45..my driving is V. Spirited and a mixed vague of country, urban , and m-way.
It's comfortable , fast and has bags of torque, it looks fantastic and feels a bit special and exclusive
Let's not be kidding ourselves gents, they are flawed and need work to bring the performance to where a Ford focus or volkswagen golf is in stock form. The overall build quality is below that of the big 4 german marques.
Buy with eyes wide open and you will be ok.
I would buy another GT, but next time I would find one for 2k and have the same put aside for fettling.
The alternatives are just not attractive enough to me at present....What else has the looks ,comfort , performance and exclusivity. .not forgetting the very handy boot space and useable back seats.
so for now I will remain an alfa driving sucker with an open wallet policy...and hope for the best...
