Have to agree with wrinx, the JTD seems a pretty solid piece of metal. Guessing at things....if the engine was let run low on oil then maybe No3 bearing suffers more and in later years at higher mileages could be the one to fail first ? But honestly have never heard of a bottom end failure on a JTD, least not at any sane mileage or reasonable RPM's.
EDIT: good news (if you can call it that) is if it's only a big end it will be sump off, re-ground crank, oversized shells and hopefully not much more. Would cast a evil eye at the oil pump while in there though and replace it ideally. At least a regrind and those bits is cheaper than a new engine. After some googling I did find some mentions about "crankshaft endplay" when excessive possibly causing oil flow problems and premature bearing failure, but as I said, it was 2 mentions in 2 posts, no more detailed stuff on it.
