Well, I got to changing the CV Joint this weekend, and man am I angry now!
When I bought the car, the garage put it through it's NCT (our MOT) as it was coming due. It failed initially due to a crack on a CV boot, so they 'changed' it, and it passed.
After I hit the pothole that started off this angry rant, it became clear I needed to change it again. Fine I thought, at least I can blame the council for this one.
I began to dismantle the suspension to remove the driveshaft, and soon ran into my first problem. The upper wishbone balljoint nut wouldn't come off. The last guy to have it off (the garage) had stripped the thread putting it back on. So I had to cut the nut off and carry on.
Finally I got the driveshaft out, removed the CV joint (very easily, it's just a circlip that holds it on) and cleaned up the old CVJ to take a look at it.
It's no wonder it was wrecked, the monkey that took it off last time had used a hammer to beat it off. There were large dents on the side of the casting where a heavy hammer had been used to remove it forcibly, and on the drive shaft too! AND THEY'D THEN PUT IT BACK ON!!!! It turned out that instead of replacing the CVJ, as they'd led me to believe, they'd only replaced the boot. Then they wrecked the CVJ, wrecked the wishbone balljoint, put it all back together, and gave it to me smiling.
So due to their incompetent workmanship, I've had to pay for a new joint (€100), various sockets and such (€20), a full day's labour for me and my dad, and I still have to replace the upper wishbone to undo their stupid mistake (€???)
Oh well, they'll be seeing Angry Des tomorrow!!!!
