Well after the 10+ hours of driving yesterday, I was absolutely cream crackered!! So feeling a lot more fresh this morning...and woke up with a smile on my face since I now own a GT
Here's how it went:
A bit of background; they had told me that the only faults they could see were the scuffed alloys, a few minor scuffs on the rear bumper, a slightly worn sports button, and what looks like lacquer/paint coming off around the centre of the gear knob. They sent me pics of these faults so I knew what to expect with those.
It was really pleased with condition of the car exterior when I turned up, they'd been honest about the alloys and a few minor scuffs on the rear bumper, they really aren't bad at all, so was happy with that.
However the interior...different story. What they hadn't told me about; an old blackberry cradle fitting screwed into the dash (to the right of the steering wheel), the passenger side door window control housing popped out and wouldn't pop back in, there's a rubber oval shaped patch within this handle which was somehow half gauged out, there'd been a sticker on the drinks holder which hadn't come off properly, the rear view mirror was wobbly to the point I thought it might drop off, the sports button wasn't just worn, the actually sports button housing had popped out and wouldn't pop back in, and there were a couple of tears and marks in the ceiling material.
Needless to say, after 5 hours driving and numerous discussion on the phone through the week discussing the car, I wasn't too chuffed! He felt the wrath of an angry Geordie, but being a typical cocky salesman I don't think he really gave a ****. I think he knew he held the cards since I'd travelled so far to see it.
I soon for got about these problems when I started driving...a few 30mph streets before hitting some dual carriageway, which for me is when it came to life. It felt nice on the streets, I'm used to a firm ride so that doesn't bother me, but on the 50+ roads...it's just an absolute joy to drive. I was so impressed with how it handled and the power delivery seems excellent for a diesel. All other mechanical aspects seemed fine; clutch was good, no knocking, I was very impressed. The only thing I did notice was that the brakes are fine for town driving etc. but an imminent stop from dual carriageway speeds isn't so clever...is this normal? I'd say they're a bit spongy when having to break hard from speed. Yet seem fine at low speed...strange.
Once I'd had a 30min drive, I started thinking about the interior issues again. My quick assessment was that generally, they're mostly things that SHOULD be easy enough to sort out.
The blackberry cradle fitting; was going to look into an iPhone cradle anyway, so if I can get one with the same fitting, or one that covers the hole, that would solve that problem.
The passenger side door window controls; I guess there'll be a clip or two that have snapped, may need to replace the full housing but hope I can pick one up cheap enough on eBay, on here, Autolusso maybe...
The passenger side door handle; either new door handle all together, or if it's a screw cover I think I may have found the part already (Passenger Door Handle Thumb Screw Cover - Autolusso New Alfa Romeo Parts
). From the item description it seems it's the only thing it can be.
The sticker on the drinks holder...I'll have a go at that, not the end of the world if it doesn't come off fully but it's shame.
The rear view mirror; how are these fixed to the windscreen? I've never actually had to look into that before. It's currently stuck on with velcro by the looks of it....surely not factory standard?! I would've expected some form of strong double sided adhesive tape or something?
The sports button housing; it looks like there are two silver clips which are supposed to hold this in place, however they don't...I don't know if it's the housing clips, or whatever it's supposed to clip into that's broken here.
Is it possible to get a GT ceiling re-upholstered? I might be able to get the marks out, but would still be left with two tears. They're all above the rear seats so don't have to see it but I want it sorted.
I'll supply pics, good and bad, when I get time
Also, I'll start a new thread regarding questions on mods (swirl flap removal being the biggy) so any assistance on that would be brilliant
Thanks again for all your help
Even with it's problems, I'm over the moon I've got her
