Stiff clutch and sloppy gear change

The clutch on my v6 seems to be getting heavier so much so it's getting a ball ache to drive it around town. It's not slipping or anything and the bite point is around half way, so I dont believe it needs changing. Any ideas on what it may be? and is there an easy fix for someone who's not that handy with the spanners?

I've also got a very floppy gear lever. It goes in ok but there's a lot of movement side to side when in gear and doesn't feel positive at all. Yesterday I went from 5th to 1st instead of 3rd and luckily I was only doing 30mph and dipped the clutch just in time.

Just done the thermostat and that has made a good difference, so it's just this now, well until the next thing goes wrong
