Oil on bell housing

I replaced the battery last week on my 2.0L 147 and with the battery removed I could see quite a lot of oil covering the outside (top) of the flywheel/clutch bell housing, the oil appears to be coming from higher up, either the head gasket or higher. Is this a common failure? Also a squarish hole at the top of the bell housing allowed a view of the flywheel, I presume there should be a closure of some sort which is missing on my car - any advise would be helpful. Ian
