Another Variator Question
Sorry if this has been covered before, but I need info quickly and don't have time to read through all the "variator" search results.
Does an ailing variator only make noise on start-up?
Our 2002 2 litre 147 infrequent makes a diesel-like noise for a few seconds on start-up (maybe once every 10-20 starts). However, we do consistenty get a diesel-like growl under 3,000rpm - especially under 2,000rpm on over-run. Could this noise be an ailing variator?
This noise has only started since the local AR dealer replaced the cambelt and tensioners 3 weeks ago. They didn't replace the variator. Immediately after the service the car sounded horrid - a loud clattery diesel sound. I refused to take it home and when I picked it up the next day it sounded normal. (they said the noise was due to a plastic "tab" on a tensioner contacting the cambelt cover) The diesel noise has since been gradually coming back. I'm suspicious the dealer just did an oil flush to avoid their labour time to replace what I suspect is a failing variator.
I'm fronting the dealer day after tomorrow over this, and would like to be sure of my facts before I start arguing it is a failing variator which they should have replaced at the time of the cambelt service. From the racket the car was making I expect it would have been obvious to them. I suspect they've tried to fob me off.
