dying battery?

I know my battery is past its best - original from '08 and recently tested showing it's ready for replacement

It occasionally struggles to start the car in very cold weather, but today, it very nearly failed to start after a 3-hour drive up to Middlesbrough. It didn't catch for the first two attempts, and on the third try , it threw a VDC failure error. It finally caught on the fourth try after ten seconds of churning (accompanied by a delightful cloud of smoke)

Would a tired battery cause this, or should I be looking at something else?

Yea definitely dying batteries can cause all sorts of funny errors to pop up on the dash...

If it's the original from '08 then it certainly doesn't owe you anything... 7 years is very good going for a battery!

Get a new one with as high CCA as you can find, the bigger this value the more punch it can give when you're cranking!
