hoarding parts for a

Well now i don't know if it is engaged or not. Have a strap around box and trolley under to ensure true and correct when mating together. Took box back off and tried agin.... Result is exactly the same. the gap is the thickness of little finger all way round. However there is a guide for the m12 bolt at front to marry up with box, which is about this thickness.
So am i being stupid and i can just bolt the gap closed, checking that nothing fowling by rotating crank as i go?
looking through inspection hole doesn't help just see a nice new Concentric slave cylinder. Cant rotate box's input shaft as intermediate shaft not installed, and easier to do crank anyway.
Also when i edge the flywheel around with a screwdriver, there is no extra resistance, or lack thereof, as it aligns.
Tried the 'get under and take weight' method, but found it more difficult.
I suppose the best way to check would be to lock the far side driveshaft, and rotate engine while looking into intermediate shaft recess for movement.
I'll do that next...
Still canny believe it's so finickity.
Just remembering how joyous working on vw bettle was; four bolts and engine out, 6 for engine and trans.
