[QUOTE=stuckinazoo;12101186]Today was my first MOT with the 8 year old 147. I was unpleasantly surprised to see it fail for its suspension.
1. Offside front upper suspension arm bush worn
2. Nearside front lower suspense arm has excessive play in bottom ball joint
These two things are also on their way out on their respective opposite sides.
Firstly am I wrong to be shocked? Only the health check I had done by the same garage last August gave that whole area all greens with no advisories. My independent inspection at the time of buying the car also gave this the OK but admittedly mentioned one ball joint had slight play. Have things really deteriorated that badly in the 4,000 miles I have done over Autumn / Winter? Could potholes have caused this? Or is someone being particularly harsh this time around?
Then there's the quotes.
i had my local good back street garage replace my o/s lower wishbone in jan 2015 , i supplied the part bought from bbc superfactors , price £36.43 fitting was £40, total was £76.52.
and last week because i had a advisory like you , & i look after my cars, i decided to go ahead and replace the 2 upper wishbones and the 2 droplinks as a matter of course, the parts again i supplied from BBCsuperfactors were Delphi priced at £29.79 each and the droplinks £7.56 each , the total was £89.64 and the price for fitting was £40 exactly, so for that work, parts supplied by me & labour, was a grand total of £130.
Now i have read the excellent blog on how to replace the wishbones on here, but the mechanic did not have to take the suspension leg off as describded on here , he got the long bolts out with a little patience , i was watching him do it , replaceing both sides in a 3 hour time , i do use this garage for all my car problems , they are not personal friends of mine , but i am satisfied that i get good work & customer satisfaction with them.
I have owned the alfa 147 car for 3 years & it came with a squeak going over manholes in the cold weather , well all that noise as gone now & the car drives well as i thought it did before the repairs anyway.
I have purchased the cambelt & water pp some time ago & will have them fit it when the warmer weather comes, not as though that makes any difference to the garage, only me watching .
the t/belt & pp cost £89, i have not had a garage quote yet, but you get an idea anyway on this site with the adverts etc.
anyway good luck & dont forget to change the droplinks for the sake of £15.
