EGR monitored data understanding

EGR valve is causing Motor control system error warning light on my Jtd GT.

I checked and monitored engine data with software and EGR was showing 0,8% up to 100% and all the values in the middle during first 7 minutes of the drive. After that(last 5 minutes of the drive) EGR was showing 0,8% value if the engine was on idle or accelerating hard. Is that normal or not?

What means 0% and what means 100% in my monitored data; or what means closed and what opened position?
When usually come to EGR error, when EGR is sticked closed or opened?

Do I have to change the EGR or just clean it?
Otherwise the car is performing normal.

Removal/cleaning is pretty easy, so I'd start there.. There's a good guide with a load of pictures if you fancy tackling it yourself!

Thank you, but I will not do it myself (no time/no knowhow about engines). I would just like to know something more, before I drive my car to a service center.

where do you live..?

I would AVOID AT ALL alfa dealership...

autolusso or the alfa workshop are the guys to go to if you are in the UK.

if not any indies are better than alfa dealers...if its just the EGR clean/delete you could also take it to a SAAB or vauxhall specialist as they use the same engine.

likelhood is you will get better service and less expense than going to fiat/alfa.

good luck.

what software are you reading with ?
can it read maf airflow ?
if it can you can log or read egr % and maf airflow mg/I at the same time you can check if the egr is stuck shut , stuck open or opening and closing normally from the results.
like this log of mine, should be similar values.
Attachment 469258
to answer question I believe depending on software of reader 0 to 4% are usual values for closed egr and with multiscan I seem to remember nothing much really over 40% but other programs may read values differently.

% is the EGR duty cycle. Roughly equates to closed at 0 to fully open at 100%. It's the electrical pulses sent to the valve to regulate it's position. 100% means the valve is permanently energised. Lower opening values are achieved by rapidly switching the power on and off to attain a less open position.

Only way of knowing how well it's closing is to remove and check. Easy enough, and easy to fix if it's sticking open due to carbon fouling.

Thank you all for your helpful replies.
Sussexa -> IT records also MAF, but in lb/min and g/s. In connection with EGR values I see no clue like on your snipped image.
You can see from my attached log here: (To download click gray button "Download this file")
