One extreme to the other re:Engine temp
I have had my x reg Alfa 156 1.8 for around 5 weeks and thought my engine temp guage was reading too high as detailed below as one example. Just drove to Ashford in kent the other day which for me was 200 miles. Wheather was 22c. If i drove at around 85-90 mph my car temp stayed around the 109 mark but no further. If i reduced my speed to around 70mph my temp guage went down to around the 95 mark. If i speed up again the temp guage soon rose the the 109 mark. If i slowed down to around 50mph through traffic the temp guage would read around the 91 mark. Done the return journey today when it was another warm day and the same above temp's were noticed. I have plenty of water so think it is down to the not too healthy looking radiator fins.
Yesterday i fitted a new radiator on my car and the state of the one i took off was terrible. There were loads of damaged aNd crumbling fins. Also several green damp stains. At a guess it was probably the original radiator. The engine temp guage now sits around the 69c/70c mark whilst driving. If i stop in traffic or let it idle it will rise to around 92c but no further. Once i start moving again it returns quickly to 69c/70c mark. I have read loads of threads and everyone seems to have there own opinion of what the temp guage shoud run at. I have seen some threads were the owners were having the same readings as me but also a lot of members state it should run bang on 90c under normal driving. I don't think my stat is broken as i would not have been receiving the readings i was before i changed the rad. Since yesterday the water level has not dropped so i don't think there are any air bubbles.
