Considering a 156 sport wagon (< £1k) as a second car. Currently driving a MY2002 325i which I can't fit the bike in and generally useless for transporting anything. I appreciate the 156sw isn't a very spacious estate but will be fine for my needs and I've wanted a 156 since 1998....
I've been wanting to get into fettling with cars for a while, but haven't as I use the car everyday for work. So figure if I have a fleet of two ageing cars I can take my time fettling and have more flexibility.
Don't fancy a diesel, so looking at twinnys, would be happy with the 1.6 or 1.8 as my BMW can be my quick car (it's not actually that quick, but it does sound nice.) Not that fussed about spec, but ideally teledial wheels.
Been lurking long enough to know about cambelt intervals and cr*p suspension.
Will I get a reasonable runner for that money, or just likely to end up with a dog?
Based in NW / Manchester. Anybody got anything they're looking to sell or any recommendations from the current crop for sale?
My current car is the second 1.8 SW since 2007. Very good for the money. Concur with the others, there are some donkeys out there, so be aware...
The engines in general are pretty robust, the main issue is the variator. It'll sound like a taxi diesel engine. My first 156 was a 2001 and current is a 2002, and I haven't experienced any rust problems, but it's always worth checking wheel arches, under the spare wheel in the boot and just general check of the chasis... should be fine, though.
The biggest problem I've experienced is the front suspension bushes/arms. That's more of an annoyance than a problem.
The boot space is bigger than many expect: I can fit a manual wheelchair in the back, layed flat.
Don't buy the first one you come across. Look at two or three before parting with your hard earned.
Enjoy the Alfa experience.
