Diesel Noise in Petrol 147

When I start my 04 1.6 147 particularly when the engine is warm it sounds like a diesel engine for a few seconds. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hmm should have done a search before posting. Seems to be a common issue with dodgy variators. Since I've only had the belts etc replaced recently, does anyone know how easy a new variator jobby is to fit?
Advise on this would be appreciated.

I think its your Variator(whatever that is!) THere are plenty of threads on here about it.

My 146 used to do that but it didn't seem to affect the performance but it really used to bug me!!

it sounds most definitely like the variator is failing/failed. it won't do any harm though (bar being an embarassing noise) and the best time to get it changed is at your next cambelt change as that belt needs replacing at the same time (sorry about that bad news). Do a search, there are all sorts of cures/fixes to reduce the noise some claim they work well other saw no difference. Most of them seem to involve some sort of engine flush. Try wynns engine flush and follow the directions on the bottle to the letter. it might reduce/stop the noise.

Re: Diesel Noise in Petrol 147

I would get it changed when you can, it should cost no more than 400.

Don't leave it though, i found, as the problem gets worse the car will start stalling on start up, then it will start losing power. I would say it is safe to leave for 6 months, but avoid leaving it longer.

You can gain some time by giving it a flush and replacing the oil.
