Are Alfa liable?

Hello everyone, I'm driving a 147 ts lusso 3 door 2003 model. Fully alfa serviced and all advice followed. This month I joined the not too exclusive club of timing belt snapping and destroying the engine, repair was £3000.
The repair shop tells me alfa changed their advice on when to replace the timimg belt from 72000 to 36000 miles last november. My 36000 mile service was last june (i.e. when advice was to change at 72000) and so it was left as is.
So my question is should I have been advised by alfa that the rules had changed and are they liable for the repair since they didn't.
Thanks for any advise, john

Re: Are Alfa liable?

Not sure but i recently bought a 147, Yesterday in the post comes a letter from the dealer thanking me for my purchase, advising me of my warrenty and their aftersales service etc etc etc At the very end of the letter was a PS which read...."please be advised that the Belt change on Alfa 147s has been revised from 72000 miles to 36000 miles or three years which ever comes first"

I am assuming you did not recieve any letter like this?

Afraid not. I'm not entirely sure they have my current address, however all their sales stuff gets to me, so why not the important stuff.

Re: Are Alfa liable?

Sorry, cubjohn that you had had such a bad experience with your Alfa and with the belt failure. The weakness in this area has been known for some years but Alfa has only confirmed recently (about six months ago) that there is a problem.

If you have a full service history (complying with mileage and yearly intervals) and your repairs were carried out by an Alfa dealer rather than an independent Alfa specialist then yes I would reasonably expect a contribution to your repair costs.

If all the servicing and repairs were carried out by the same dealer I would approach them first. If not get in contact with Alfa UK.

If your repairs were not carried out by Alfa dealer (or approved service centre) I don't think you can reasonably expect them to contribute.

Agree with Sunbar !!

If that is the case then ARUK should hopefully make a goodwill payment of some description !!

Re: Are Alfa liable?

I'm sorry to hear about your cambelt, and a little shocked by the repair costs.
I mentioned this before so apologies to everyone else for the repeat. My cambelt snapped at 58k miles and aged 4.5 years last August. It took a lot of phone calls to ARUK, but in the end they stumped up the cash for the entire repair (which was carried out by an Alfa dealer and cost £1900). I had full dealer service history, but they didn't even ask to see it! Also, my car is an import, which initially caused a negative response. Naturally, I persevered.
If you are firm but fair with them (as I feel I was), I think they will respond well. Getting angry and shouting (although fun and difficult not to do) is probably not a good idea. Good luck, and persevere!
