Maybe your mechanic is right (I am certainly no expert)
My 1998 V6 had a gearbox oilseal leak, there are 2 of them ( I had both). There was oil loss and while the gearchange was Ok , Once that was sorted it felt loads better. While you may well have bigger problems, ask about oil seals, I have been told that thay are common on older cars (the rubber perishes). But... its a relatively big job, manhours wise to fix (parts are not too bad) and your mechanic is right to suggest that you change the clutch at the same time as changing the seals means opening up the clutch etc.
EB offer reconditioned, new and GTa clutches,,,, which one is better is another debate!! I was happy with a new one.
Whatever, while V6's are cheap these days, remember that you have the "Arese" engine and that 'sound" is worth all the maintenence costs.
